This New Year we implemented a new family rule...
The kids (really it is the girls) struggle with trying new foods, so our new rule is that they have to try one bite of everything on the table. (Wha Ha Ha)
I dropped this bomb on the family yesterday just before dinner. I was serving wiener wraps (which they love), fries, and a caramelized green bean. The beans were greeted with wailing and gnashing of teeth. Kyle, Robert, and I dug in and all loved the beans (they are from a new cookbook a got called Our Best Bites). The girls are a different story. Anne finally tried her one green bean and after eating it gave it an 8 out of 10 on her yummy scale. Not bad! I will totally take an 8. Victoria and Claire chose the consequence... They had to go to their room for the rest of the night. Both were super excited about that, so I was a little nervous about my decision to make that the consequence.
Off to their room they went and out came the barbies. (Grrrr, but I never told them that they couldn't play) They got bored after an hour (Wha Ha Ha) and started asking to come out. Ummm. NO! Claire was asleep by 7 and Victoria shortly followed.
Today we had Chicken Alfredo with, you guested it, left over beans! (Wha Ha Ha). Anne popped hers in right away, Claire decided to try it and said, "I don't want to go in my room, so will you give me a tiny one? Hmm, that is actually yummy!" That just left Victoria... and with a little bit of prompting and one minor gag reflex, she got it down!
So 2 for 2, we are staying strong with our "The kids will eat what I give them, not "fend for yourself" cereal" resolution. And hopefully they will discover that I can actually cook and 95% of the time it is pretty darn good food. (I had to give 5% to the risk factor of me trying new recipes because you never know if they will be good. Or I could just burn something. You never know.)

5 who want to talk about it:
That's a great idea! I still have 2 picky girls that I should probably be a little more strict with but at this time I don't have the energy to pick that battle but soon, I just might do it! You GO!!
Way to go! I'm terrified for when my kids start doing this. For now, they'll both try a few bites of pretty much everything. I know you're a good cook cause there's nothing you can't do. :)
We had those carmelized green beans for a RS luncheon last month - they were so good!
Is that cookbook one that I can't live without?
You really are the Super Nanny!
good luck!!! it's always such a struggle getting kids to eat!
