Super Hero Cape Tutorial

Because a huge number of people have been asking me how I make my super hero capes, I have decided to post a tutorial. –Now calm down, I know you are all SOOO excited but there is no reason to fall off your chairs in excitement over it!-
These capes are super easy and just about every kid I know loves and wants one, even the ones that probably should be a little too old for them. It usually takes me an hour from start to finish and it can cost between $7-$10. I used to have pictures of what the kids look like in them, but they were lost when my computer crashed. (if you cruise around my blog you might find a picture of them wearing the cape) Trust me- they are really cute and everyone loves them.
I am going to start an etsy account and sell them for $20, so if you don't want to take the time and make them then I will be happy to do it for you. All you have to do would be to pick your colors of you shirt and cape and tell me the initial you wanted on it.

Step 1. Supplies (child size shirt)

A solid color t-shirt
½ yard of fabric in a coordinating color
1 sheet of felt in each coordinating color (2 total)
Stitch witchery- this is found in the notions isle. It is really cheap and I found that it works the best out of the entire no sew adhesives.
Scissors, pins, and thread to match
A super emblem pattern

Step 2. Find a font that you would like to use on your emblem from your computer. Enlarge it until it fits in your emblem. I just made my emblem. Mine is 5 ¼ inches across the top, 7 ¼ inches on the larger sides, and 3 7/8 inches on the shorter sides. It is also about an inch thick. Once my pattern for my emblem is made then I pin it to my felt pieces and cut them out. Set them aside.

Step 3. Take your fabric and sew it into a pillow case. I like to iron my seams down so I keep a pretty decent seam allowance which leaves enough space for a good press down. Once sewn, then iron out your seams to create a crisp line. Place your fabric on top of your shirt and pin the fabric to form to the collar of the shirt. (Don’t pin it to the shirt)* You can also do this before you sew it which creates the top outline of the shirt for you to sew as well as the sides and you just leave a little pocket to reverse your fabric, but I like sewing the top last for a cleaner line on the collar.* Cut about 1 to ½ inches away from the pins that formed the collar. Fold in and press your top to create a clean look. Pin the cape to the shirt and sew it on. Make sure the shirt is not bunched up so you don’t sew it to the cape. I also can’t stand it when I make the tag of the shirt go funny, so I pin that down too. I know it is a little OCD, but I can’t help it.

Step 4. Take your felt emblems and on the back side of them put your stitch witchery on it. Flip it over and center the opposite colors together. Make sure you center the emblems. Place a fabric remnant or a pillow case over it and steam iron it on. Read the how to directions on the packaging. It is really easy.
Presto! You have a personalized super hero cape.
